Ok, for the past few weeks I’ve been wanting to really push more dry-brush work into my….work. A big step towards that was taking a good look at the work that Shawn Crystal is doing over on http://www.inkpulp.com. He and I have known each other for a few years via Heroes Con and social media. He was a teacher at the Savannah College of Art and Design for 12 years (I think) but has since gone freelance. He did a lot of work on Deadpool for Marvel but in the last couple of years he’s branched out on his own to start his own school for comic making and art. Head on over to his website and check it out. He’s pretty awesome. I took his inking class. I am a firm believer in you can always learn something new. His video for that class did teach me a bunch. Namely that I need to pick up my dry-brush game. With the class came the pencils that he did for the instructional video and so got to try them out. I’m pretty happy with how it came out and you can see the final version in the last pic. Doing dry-brush is once you’ve dipped your brush in the ink, I wipe it a bit on a cloth to get some of the ink out of it so as to give it that dry fade. You can also use it to, say, fill blacks and as the belly of the brush pushes the ink out it will become ‘dry’ so-to-speak, and then you can get that special fade. It’s tricky, to say the least, but it’s a really wonderful texture to add to your ink-work. I love variety in the line-work and this adds a lot to inking. For further learning purposes I really can’t recommend Shawn’s site more. It’s sure as hell cheaper than college, which won’t teach you half of the this stuff. But give him a look and shout on social media if you’re inclined. I have another one of these that I’m doing on a piece by Mack Chater here soon too. Enjoy. 😀
